RECAP

The Redcoats were four outs away from securing the first game of their doubleheader against the Mustangs at the Marsa Grounds. They held a one run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two on, and two out, Patrick Pace pulled the first pitch that he saw from pitcher Loreto Scicluna and pulled it into deep left field. Pace’s three-run homer gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game and effectively ended the Redcoats’ hopes of finishing atop the league standings. Pace went 4 for 4, with 2 HRs, 3 runs scored and 5 RBIs.

The Redcoats had the influential Josef Vella missing from this match. Due to the unavailability of Massimo Mallia and Armando Xuereb and of the injured Jonathan Grech they were forced to play for the first time this season without the fourth outfielder. The right-hand batting Mustangs pulled almost everything over the infield and into left field and left-centrefield: a strategically positioned rover might have made the difference.

The Redcoats batted well, with seven out of their nine batters registering multiple-hit games. Jeff Tabone and Steve Ellis led the 17-hit attack with three hits apiece. The Redcoats took an early three-run lead, then added to it to lead 6-2. They also led 7-6 and 8-7, the latter courtesy of a Joseph Scicluna RBI ground rule double. But the Mustangs, having played catch-up all game long, rode Pace’s hot bat to victory. The big winners were the idle Jayhawks, who with the Redcoats’ defeat secured first place in the league.
