RECAP

The second game of the doubleheader had the feeling of a dead rubber. The Redcoats took a 2-run lead at the top of the first inning, but the Mustangs then sent nine men to the plate and scored up to the five-run limit. A deflating turn of events, experienced only three times by the Redcoats this season. Although he did not match the output from the opener, once again Patrick Pace tormented the Redcoats going two for three with a HR, two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Redcoats tried to salvage a split in their last at-bat. Jeff Tabone led off with a solo shot, his fourth home run of the season. Shaun Chircop singled, and came home on Steven Galea’s fourth home run of the campaign. Galea had also hit a two-run shot in the opener. Joseph Scicluna walked and Loreto Scicluna doubled. With the tying runs in scoring position, however, Shawn Ritchie retired the next two batters to condemn the Redcoats to their first doubleheader sweep of the season.

These games brought to a close the senior Redcoats’ first season of competition. The six ex-Gozo Tornadoes players Attard, Chircop, Ellis, Galea, Tabone and Vella brought to the team tremendous quality in all aspects of the game, something which left a noticeable impact on the rest of the squad. It was, however, the great camaraderie among them and their new teammates, which, despite the searing hot summer that was then looming, made everyone wish that this was not the end.
