RECAP
The Jayhawks entered this doubleheader with a chance to effectively end the Redcoats’ chances for honours. With Keith Bartolo in the side the chances were good that they would do so. Indeed Keith hit three home runs and drove in six of his team’s eight runs. This was not good enough to carry his team to victory in the opener, however, simply because the Redcoats batted well when it mattered and managed to stifle a last inning rally by the Jayhawks registering the last out with Keith representing the tying run on deck.
The Redcoats started the game well and jumped to a 7-2 lead. They let the Jayhawks back in the contest and risked losing the game when they went behind by a run in the fifth inning. They tied it in the sixth inning and then blew the game wide open by scoring up to the five run limit in their last at-bat. The Redcoats played without Jeff Tabone and Mark Xuereb, who were both unavailable. This meant that promising youth team members Massimo Mallia and Armando Xuereb made their first start for the team.
Shaun Chircop carried the big bat in the opener. He went 4 for 5 with five RBIs. Josef Vella went 3 for 4 with three runs scored. Nine out of the ten Redcoats had at least a hit. The Redcoats’ lower order made a significant contribution with the bat and on the basepaths as well. In fact 9 out of the 13 runs were scored by the bottom half of the batting line-up. In the crucial 7th inning 7 of the 8 Redcoats hitters that came to bat reached base for a 5-run game winning rally that started with the number six hitter in the line-up.
