RECAP

When the Patriots scored four runs in the top of the first and two more in the top of the second, the situation looked ominously familiar. Yet another split of a doubleheader looked likely for the two teams who had previously split all their doubleheaders. Michael Bartolo in particular seemed determined to earn his team a split with his bat. He hit a mammoth 2-run shot to left field in the first and an RBI single in the second. The Patriots were aided by four walks given up by Redcoats pitcher Loreto Scicluna.

Unlike on previous occasions, however, the Redcoats responded with the bat. They scored up to the maximum of five runs in the bottom of the 2nd to signal their intent. After both teams went silently in the 3rd, the Patriots scored three in the top of the 4th, with Michael Bartolo driving in two and Clint Grima driving in the other. The Redcoats responded superbly with two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. They took their first lead of the game in the 5th and secured the victory with 4 more runs in the 6th.

The Redcoats registered 20 hits. Nine of the 10 starters had at least one hit and ten of the eleven Redcoats had at least one RBI. Charles Attard and Jeff Tabone took advantage of the wide expanses in the outfield and hit back-to-back inside the park home runs leading off the 5th inning. Josef Vella cooled off slightly. He went 1 for 4 but that hit cleared the bases for a 3-run triple. The Redcoats’ improved hitting kept them with a chance to overtake the Jayhawks and eliminated the Patriots from contention.
