RECAP
The Patriots and the Redcoats came into the opening game of this doubleheader still with a chance for honours but with the knowledge that a loss would effectively end their challenge for first place. Led by Michael Bartolo and Clint Grima the Patriots constituted a serious challenge to the Redcoats’ aspirations. The two hitters, however, were held in check by the Redcoats, each of them going no better than 1 for 3, with a run scored and no runs batted in.
The Redcoats welcomed back Jeff Tabone and Mark Xuereb. Armando Xuereb kept his place in the starting lineup and played once again in short centre-field. The Redcoats had another good outing with the bat. Every starter reached base and all but one had a hit in this 13-hit assault. In this game, the top of the order made a massive contribution, with lead-off hitter Josef Vella continuing his good form going 2 for 4, with 2 runs batted in. Steve Ellis went 2 for 3 with 2 runs batted in.
In this game the Redcoats took an early lead and never gave the Patriots much of a chance to mount a comeback. The Redcoats responded to runs by the Patriots in the top of the inning with more runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Patriots trimmed the deficit from 5 runs to 3 in their 6th, which meant that the Redcoats had some work to do in the top of the 7th. Good fielding, however, enabled the Redcoats to strand the potential tying runs, Michael Bartolo and Clint Grima, on deck.
