RECAP
In the last day of the preliminary group stage all three teams competing in the Gozo Cup Softball Tournament had the opportunity to top the group and get a bye to the Cup Final. None of the teams could afford to lose.
In the first game, the Leinster Royals started well and were leading the Connaught Rangers 2-3 after one inning. After the Rangers managed to tie it in the top of the 3rd inning the Royals scored a couple of runs in the bottom of that same inning to lead 3-5 going into the final inning. The Royals looks destined to win as they managed to get two of the first three batters out. The next batter hit a ground ball to third base, however, instead of throwing to 1st for the safe out the third basemen tried to tag the runner advancing towards home and somehow missed him. That would have been the third and final out of the inning to end the game and the Royals would have been through to the final. Instead, the Connaught Rangers went on to score another three run, thanks in part to a Malcolm Refalo two-RBI double. The Royals were unable to mount a comeback and the Rangers won the game 7-5.
With this loss the Royals finished the preliminary group stage with a win, two losses and a tie. They will now face the loser of the game between the Athletics and the Rangers in a playoff on Monday, July 21 for the right to contest the Gozo Cup Final.
