RECAP

Għajnsielem Redcoats had the opportunity to watch their opponents, the Mustangs, in action in the first half of this double-header involving the two Redcoats teams and the Mustangs. The latter had taken the Redcoats Baseball’s best shot and recovered to win comfortably. So Għajnsielem Redcoats knew full well how formidable the task was ahead of them. They started well with the bat, but, just as they had done in last year’s road game against this team, they fielded poorly and conceded heavily in the first three innings. Għajnsielem Redcoats tried to mount a late inning rally just as they had done in their home game against this team, but their rally fell short so that the Mustangs emerged 6-13 winners.

Għajnsielem Redcoats batted around in the first inning and scored three runs. With one out, Giulia Lateo, Kacey Grima, Annabel Said and Estelle Scicluna all reached base with the first two runners crossing the plate. Annabel Said scored following Yana Vella’s hit. The Mustangs replied with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Redcoats had the top of the order up in the second inning and instead of testing the fielding skills of their opponent on the challenging surface of the Marsa baseball diamond, all three Redcoats struck out. The Mustangs went for the kill and scored the maximum of five runs in consecutive innings and in the process took an insurmountable lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Għajnsielem Redcoats made the score more respectable with three more runs scored by Giulia Lateo following Estelle Scicluna’s RBI single, and by Annabel Said and the same Scicluna following some aggressive base-running after Rebecca Grech’s 2-run hit. The Redcoats retired the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the inning. The Redcoats stranded runners in every inning barring the ill-fated second inning, so with some luck, better hitting and base-running the score might have been closer. In the end, Mustangs were deserving winners and so consolidated their lead at the top of the standings.
