RECAP

Redcoats Baseball’s first game in Malta was against the highly rated Mustangs team at the grass-surfaced Marsa Ground. The Redcoats started reasonably well and held the lead after two. The Mustangs, however, have a strong batting line-up and scored heavily in the third and fourth innings to take the lead. Their fielding was good enough to shut the Redcoats out in their last three at-bats and the home team won 5-11.

Malcolm Refalo opened the batting with an infield hit. Armando Xuereb reached base with another hit and both runners scored following Massimo Mallia’s RBI ground-out and Kirsty Bonnici’s base hit. The nervous Redcoats defended with jitters in the bottom of the inning and the Mustangs’s top of the order all crossed the plate for a 4-2 home lead. The Redcoats’ reply was swift. After Ian Refalo’s out, three consecutive hits by Roselle Azzopardi, Malcolm Refalo and Armando Xuereb loaded the bases. All three base runners scored following Mallia’s base-hit, Bonnici’s fielder’s choice ground-out and Gerrard Xuereb’s hit. The Redcoats retired the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the second inning.

The momentum generated from this inning, however, dissipated in the third inning when the Mustangs retired the Redcoats in order and took the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. They consolidated their lead with good fielding in the top of the fourth and made sure of the win with four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Despite Angelo Muscat’s one out base-hit in the top of the fifth, the Redcoats failed to add to their total and surrendered the game and the division lead to the Mustangs.
