RECAP
The Malta Baseball and Softball Association Youth Baseball Minor League 2013 continued this morning at the Sannat Ground with the return game between the Redcoats Club two teams, Redcoats Baseball and the Għajnsielem Redcoats. The official hosts, Għajnsielem Redcoats, won 4-3. The game was umpired by Mr. Chuck Micallef. After two rounds of games all the sides in this 5-team league, which includes Marsa Mustangs and the two Mellieħa teams, Blue Jays and Grand Slammers, have a 1-1 record.
Għajnsielem Redcoats won this game with sound defending and clutch hitting. On their part, Redcoats Baseball were unlucky when in the middle innings their power hitter Massimo Mallia was robbed of a two-out extra base hit with two runners on base by a great defensive play executed by Kacey Grima at first base. Redcoats Baseball also missed the contribution of Kirsty Bonnici who missed the game due to illness.
Għajnsielem Redcoats were determined to put behind them the weak defensive display in the opener and managed to shut out Redcoats Baseball in the first three innings with solid fielding and sensible decision making. They also managed to gain a psychological advantage by scoring a run in each of the second and third innings. Kacey Grima led off the bottom of the second with a hit. Estelle Scicluna followed suit with an infield hit. Martina Cardona struck out and Gianella Mallia grounded into a fielder’s choice moving Grima to third. Denise Xuereb drove her in after a long at-bat. In the bottom of the third inning, Jasmine Bonnici reached base and eventually scored following a Giulia Lateo hit and Annabel Said’s fielder’s choice grounder.
Then in the top of the fourth, Redcoats Baseball finally put a run on the board. Three consecutive batters, Wayne Hili, Ian Refalo and Kurt Fenech reached base with one out. Maria Grima then drove Hili in with a fielder’s choice ground out to second base. Gerrard Xuereb then grounded out to Lateo to end the inning. The Għajnsielem Redcoats, however, replied with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Denise Xuereb and Yana Vella reached base and both scored following Jasmine Bonnici’s fielder’s choice ground-out and Giulia Lateo’s base hit. The Redcoats had the top of the order up for their last at-bat. Malcolm Refalo reached base with another line drive base hit. Armando Xuereb hit a grounder to Giulia Lateo for a fielder’s choice. Massimo Mallia reached base. The runners advanced to second and third following an error. They both came home on Wayne Hili’s two-out base hit. Ian Refalo then grounded out to first base to leave the tying run stranded on third.
With the two derby games out of the way, the two Redcoats teams will turn their attention to the Maltese opponents. First up are the Marsa Mustangs whom they will face on Sunday in a double-header at the Marsa Grounds.
