Redcoats finish in second place

In 2013 MABS organized a senior softball competition for the first time in its history to replace the second division of the men’s baseball league. This league was organized on a double round robin basis so that each of the four teams that participated played six doubleheaders. The games were slow-pitch, with 7 innings per game, played with a 12” regulation softball. The Redcoats opened their campaign on April 14, 2013, when they played their first ever competitive senior game against the Mellieha Jayhawks in a doubleheader at the Gozo Stadium. The Redcoats split that first doubleheader.

The most memorable games were the doubleheader sweep on June 9, 2013, at the Gozo Stadium, against the Mellieha Patriots. These two fine victories placed the Redcoats in an excellent position to claim the National Championship. The Redcoats won the first game 7-4 and the second game 14-9. The aspirations to be crowned champions evaporated in the final double header of the season when the Redcoats travelled to Marsa on the 23rd of June 2013 to take on the Mustangs needing to win both games. The Redcoats were short of players for those two games. Missing a player in the outfield made all the difference and the Redcoats lost both games to finish the season in second place with a 6-6 record. The Jayhawks with an 8-4 record won the league.

These two games in Marsa brought to an end the competitive commitments of the Redcoats in their first season of existence. The various Redcoats teams played a total of 38  games (21 in Gozo and 17 in Malta) in 4 different league competitions. 34 players participated in one or more of these leagues: 11 senior players, 15 girls and 8  boys.
