The Malta Baseball & Softball Association organised a baseball U13 doubleheader between the Mellieha Rookies and Ghajnsielem Redcoats. The two games which were played at the Ghajnsielem Ground on Saturday afternoon were the fourth such one-day tournament of this season.
Once again the young baseball stars from Malta and Gozo did really well with some wonderful hits and slick defensive plays. It was very encouraging to see that there were more girls than boys playing the two games which goes to show that baseball is a very inclusive sport that promotes gender equality.
In the first game the all-girls’ team of the Redcoats played with the following formation: Sky (P), Martha (C), Cassidy (1B), Courtney (2B), Thea (SS), Clarissa (3B), Savanna (O), Kyra (O), Emma Lynn (O), Abigail (O), Cristina (O).
In the second game the mixed baseball team of the Redcoats played with the following formation: Chris (P), Jerome (C), Gilbert (1B), Martha (2B), Paul (SS), Ema (3B), Maya (O), Emma Lynn (O), Abigail (O), Mayah (O), Kaitlyn (O), Cristina (O), Kyen (O).
Both the Redcoats teams had a very good season with the all-girls’ team losing their first game and winning their next three, whereas the mixed team won all of the four games they played. It is hoped that for next season there would be more categories maybe with the introduction of an U10 competition. It would also help if for the U13s there would be player-pitch baseball games to give the players much needed experience.
