Redcoats Softball face tournament rivals, Mellieha Curves, next Sunday at the Sannat Ground, in what could be the deciding game of the tournament
Redcoats Softball consolidated 1st place in the Women’s Fastpitch Softball Tournament organised by the Malta Baseball & Softball Association with a hard-fought victory over the Luxol Mustangs at the Marsa Sports Grounds on Sunday. This was the 4th win from five for the Redcoats who now need to win their last remaining game to make sure of clinching the tournament.
Redcoats Softball started well and jumped to a 3-run lead in the 1st inning. They failed to pad that lead and let the Mustangs back in the game allowing 2 runs to score in the 3rd inning. In the top of the 4th inning the Redcoats managed to drive in a solitary run to make the score 4-2 in their favour. However, the Mustangs then put a rally together scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead for the first time in the game. Redcoats Softball answered with a rally of their own in the top of the 5th scoring five runs, with the biggest blow coming with a 2-out double hit by Estelle Scicluna to drive in two runs to make the score 9-6 in their favour.
Having regained the lead, the Redcoats were not in the mood to give it up again and despite two base hits in the bottom of the 5th inning, they managed to shut out the Mustangs to clinch a memorable, come-from-behind victory against a very good team.
Marice Meilak had a very good game with two base hits and a walk, scoring two runs. Redcoats catcher, Joanne Mifsud, was solid behind the plate putting in a selfless performance. Young Redcoats pitcher, Estelle Scicluna, put in another positive performance striking out 12 of the 31 batters she faced while throwing 71 of her 110 pitches for strikes. She also had two clutch base hits, hitting doubles in the 4th and 5th innings to drive in three runs.
Redcoats Softball now face tournament rivals, Mellieha Curves, next Sunday at the Sannat Ground, in what could be the deciding game of the tournament. A win for the Redcoats would clinch the title for them whereas should they lose they would have to hope that the Curves drop their remaining 3 games. The other team of the Club participating in this competition, Ghajnsielem Redcoats, will face the Luxol Mustangs next Sunday, also at the Sannat Ground.
