The Ghajnsielem Redcoats women’s softball team continued to show great progress putting on yet another improved performance this morning to beat the experienced Mellieha Curves 14-4 at the Sannat Ground. This was Game 1 of the best-of-5 Fastpitch Softball Championship.

Starting pitcher, Estelle Scicluna, was dominant especially in the first three innings, striking out 7 of the first 11 hitters she faced allowing 2 runs to score one of which was unearned. By the end of three the Redcoats had a commanding lead, going up 13-2. Catcher Denise Xuereb, was also instrumental playing a very demanding and important position.

There was also a significant improvement defensively. Only two errors were committed and there were several important defensive plays. Corrine Grima who replaced the injured Rebecca Grech at 2nd base had three assists; left handed player, Daphne Cassar, filling in at 3rd base, caught an infield pop-up , which was turned challenging by the swirling wind;  Lourdes Buttigieg got an assists from right field throwing to Yana Vella who relayed home to get the out at home plate; while Yana Vella playing at 1st base, registered 8 put-outs along with the assist.

Similarly, it was also an improve offensive performance. Estelle Scicluna led off with a well-hit inside-the-park home run setting the tone for her team mates who followed with another five hits in a 5-run 1st inning. Up and down the line up everyone contributed with timely hits, walks, and runs scored. It was a special day as well for the Redcoats as Naomi Xerri, the youngest member of the team, made her debut, coming in for Arianne Bezzina in right field in the top of the 4th inning. Naomi is a very promising player who is expected to do well for the Redcoats.

With this victory, the Redcoats lead the series 1-0. The two teams will face each other again next Sunday in Marsa in Game 2 of the Championship. The Redcoats hope to have back Rebecca Grech and Emma Mercieca who were not available for Game 1 through injury and sickness respectively. The Redcoats will seek to keep improving in an effort to secure Game  2 and take a commanding lead in the series.
