One of the objectives of this programme is to introduce minority sports to children with the hope that they develop a love for such sports and as a result participate in afterschool programmes
Following the successful participation in a national pilot project intended for sports clubs to visit schools to promote their sport, the Ghajnsielem Redcoats are now participating in #BEACTIVEMALTA, which is a joint effort between SportMalta, the Education Department and several associations and sports clubs from all over Malta.
The Redcoats submitted a proposal for a weekly multisport programme for the Gozo College Ghajnsielem Primary School that included rugby, baseball, football, athletics, basketball and volleyball. The programme was approved by the Education Officer (Physical Education), Mr Kevin Azzopardi, as well as by Mr Robert Attard of the Sports Promotion Unit at SportMalta.
One of the objectives of these sessions is to introduce minority sports to children with the hope that they develop a love for such sports and as a result participate in afterschool programmes. However, the main objective is to improve the physical literacy of the children at the school. The Ghajnsielem Redcoats are striving to enhance the competence, confidence and motivation to enjoy a variety of sports and physical activities, of those who participate in their programmes including the students at the Ghajnsielem Primary.
The first of the series of weekly sessions were held on Thursday, October 15, for children attending Kinder along with Years 1 and 2. Mr Paul Anthony Camilleri of Athletix AC, had several fun games and activities related to athletics, whereas, Joseph Scicluna introduced rugby to the young students with a session of ball familiarisation. The teachers along with the LSAs of the respective classes were very helpful during these sessions and ensured that the first day of this ambitious programme was a success. It will now be the turn of the students at Years 3 to 6 for the next sessions.
The Ghajnsielem Redcoats would like to thank Mr Kevin Azzopardi, Education Officer (Physical Education), Mr Robert Attard of the Sports Promotion Unit at SportMalta. Gozo College Principal, Mr Victor Galea, Dame Marianne Zammit, Head of School, Mr Joseph Refalo, Assistant Head, the members of the School Council, as well as the teaching staff of the Gozo College Ghajnsielem Primary School.
