The objective of this program is to improve the physical literacy of children at the school, to foster a love for the beautiful game of baseball, and to encourage boys and girls to practice more than one sport.
This week the Redcoats launched the baseball introductory program at the Ghajnsielem Primary School, Gozo College. Year 6 and Year 5 students had their baseball fundamentals session on Thursday, April 16. Base running, batting and overhead throws were introduced to the children who were all so keen and eager to do well. On Friday it was the turn of the students of Year 4 and Year 3 who also did extremely well.
Helping out with the coaching during these sessions were the respective teachers of each of these classes as well as the Learning Support Assistants. Without the assistance of the school staff these four sessions would not have been as successful.
The primary objective of this program is to help improve the physical literacy of students at the Ghajnsielem Primary School. Another objective is to introduce baseball to children and maybe help them foster a love for this beautiful game and for sports in general so that they will grow up and stay physically active. It is also hoped that this program will encourage those children who already play a sport such as football to start to play baseball as well. Playing more than one sport is important for children as it helps in their physical and mental development.
The Ghajnsielem Redcoats would like to thank the Head of the Ghajnsielem Primary School, Dame Marianne Zammit, and Assistant Head, Mr Joseph Refalo, along with all the teaching staff for accepting our invitation and for their cooperation. Gozo College Principal, Mr Victor Galea, along with Mr Kevin Azzopardi, Education Officer for Physical Education, were also instrumental in getting the program approved.
Next week Kindergarten 1 and 2 along with Year 1 and Year 2 will have their session of fun games with the focus staying on fundamental movement skills such as running, throwing and striking. The program will continue with four 45 minute sessions per week until the beginning of June.
