This softball under-15 summer tournament is the first of its kind in Malta, as the sport has traditionally been played between September and June, with the summer months deemed to be too hot to hold such competitions.

The Ghajnsielem Redcoats have today started the pre-Gozo Cup Softball Tournament training sessions at the Gozo Stadium. This softball under-15 summer tournament is the first of its kind in Malta, as the sport has traditionally been played between September and June, with the summer months deemed to be too hot to hold such competitions. The Gozo Cup Softball Tournament will be contested between three teams made up of players who last season represented the Ghajnsielem Redcoats in youth competitions organised by the Malta Baseball and Softball Association.

The three teams were named after British regiments who, in the latter half of the nineteenth century, were stationed at Fort Chambray, in Ghajnsielem. The Connaught Rangers will be coached by Steve Ellis, the Leinster Royals by Loreto Scicluna, whereas the 31st Athletics will have as their coach Joseph Scicluna. The tournament will commence on Thursday, July 10 with Game Day 1 featuring the 31st Athletics at the Leinster Royals  with the game starting at 6pm. This will be followed by another game between the Leinster Royals and the Connaught Rangers.

The Gozo Cup Softball Tournament will be played over four Game Days all played at the Sannat Ground. The Cup Final will take place on Monday, July 21. The Gozo Cup Softball Tournament is sponsored by Jesmond Mizzi Financial Advisors Limited. Mr Jesmond Mizzi will present the prestigious Gozo Cup trophy to the winners as well as medals to the players on the teams who place third, the finalists as well as the tournament winners.
