In a game where nobody gave them any chance of winning, Redcoats Baseball almost pulled off a great upset against the reigning youth baseball champions, Mustangs, at the Marsa baseball ground. The young Redcoats showed great character and determination not to give up on a game that was all but lost and they managed to put together a great rally in the top of the 5th inning to score five runs to tie the game at 11.
Angelo Muscat and Corrine Zahra led off the inning with consecutive base hits. Then Maria Grima followed with an RBI double to score Angelo from second base. Denise Xuereb, who had a triple and a double in the first and fourth innings respectively, scoring two runs, then had an RBI ground-out to make the score 8-11. The next five batters reached base to drive another three runs home. At that point the inning stopped as the maximum five runs were scored and the game was tied at 11-11. Incredible!
When one considers that in their last outing against the Blue Jays in Mellieha, this group of players could only manage two base hits in a 0-9 shut-out loss, even a 6-11 score would have been a moral victory for the Redcoats especially given the pedigree of the opposition. Succumbing to an 11-12 walk-off loss at the hands of the Mustangs was an achievement in itself.
The Redcoats now are determined to win their first game of the season. Their next opponents are the Grand Slammers who visit Gozo on April 13. If the hitters continue where they left off against the Mustangs, a bit more attention on the fielding might be enough for them to register their first W of the season.
