The Redcoats won the Tee-Ball Championship 2013 held this afternoon at the Marsa Sports Ground organised by the Malta Baseball and Softball Association for boys and girls aged 6 to 9. The young Redcoats managed to win all 3 games in a quadrangular tournament.
With runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out, Steve Bajada, playing at the pitcher’s position, caught a line drive with a diving catch to his right.
In the first game the Redcoats beat the highly rated Mellieha 19-15 in what was practically the deciding game of the tournament. Mellieha looked like they were in control of the game leading 10-9 after 2 innings. Then the Redcoats scored 5 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. However, in the bottom of the 3rd inning came the play that changed the game and the final outcome of the tournament. With runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out, Steve Bajada, playing at the pitcher’s position, caught a line drive with a diving catch to his right. He then threw the ball to 1st baseman, Neil Said, who tagged 1st base and then ran to 2nd and tagged 2nd as well, getting the runners who should have been on 1st and 2nd out as they ran as soon as the ball was hit. Triple play to end the inning! The Redcoats went on to win the game 19-15.
In the second game the Redcoats beat Verdala, 10-9. Michael Xuereb went 3 for 3 with 2 runs batting in, whereas Neil Said had 2 hits from 2 at bats with 3 RBIs. In the last game the Redcoats overcame the Mustangs 10-5 to secure first place and the first ever such honour for the Redcoats. In this game Steve Bajada had a put-out and 3 assists, while Neil Said had 4 put-outs.
Congratulations to the Redcoats!
In the other games Verdala and Mustangs tied 20-20, Mellieha beat Mustangs 10-2 and then beat Verdala 10-6.
Well done to Nick Borg-Barthet and the Malta Baseball and Softball Association for organising this tournament along with all those who helped with the coaching and unpiring during the tournament. The Mellieha, Verdala and Mustangs Tee-Ball teams should also be congratulated for their respective performances.
