The first doubleheader of this season’s MABS Women’s Softball Championship Series contested between the Mellieha Curves and the Ghajnsielem Redcoats was played on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Gozo Stadium as part of the sporting events to promote Free2Gozo weekend.
The Mellieha Curves proved to be too strong for the Ghajnsielem Redcoats and won both games of this best-of-7 series. In the first game our women’s team did very well scoring 8 runs but committed several fielding errors and lost 8-15. In the second game the Curves showed better stamina and took control of the game early on and were not in the mood to give up the handsome lead that they built in the first 3 innings. At the end it was 1-10 in favour of the Curves.
Kacey Grima registered the first ever hit and scored the first ever run for the Ghajnsielem Redcoats’ women’s team.
Kacey Grima, who on October 7, 2012 registered the first ever base hit and scored the first ever run for the Ghajnsielem Redcoats when the youths played their first ever game, this Sunday she also registered the first ever hit and scored the first ever run as well for the Redcoats’ women’s team. Kacey’s first base hit was a double smashed down the left field line. She went on to have a great day reaching base on 5 of the 6 times she went at the plate. In the first game she scored 3 runs and had an RBI.
Estelle Scicluna, who was playing at 2nd base, was another stand-out performer putting on a fine defensive display making several put-outs and assists with some fine stops with her glove.
This was a learning experience for the Redcoats who will try their best to do better in the future. Next doubleheader will be played in Mellieha on December 15. Congratulations to Keith Bartolo and his coaching staff along with all the players on the Curves team for their sweep in Gozo. A massive well done to the players on the Redcoats team for their efforts. There are many reasons to feel very optimistic for the future. KEEP IT UP REDCOATS!
