The Redcoats made tremendous strides in their first season of participation in the youth competitions organised by the Malta Baseball and Softball Association. This is evident in their performances in the Youth Baseball Major League where players, rather than coaches, pitch. After losing the first game to the Grand Slammers, the Redcoats put 3 solid performances together, coming really close to beat the Grand Slammers at home and beating twice the Mustangs.
In the final game of the season played at the Gozo Stadium on May 19, 2013, Massimo Mallia pitched yet another gem going 3 plus innings allowing 3 runs and striking out 4 Mustangs. Armando Xuereb who started as a catcher replaced his cousin to close the game in the 4th inning. Two very promising pitchers who only started to play the game in mid-December 2012.
However, the 7-3 win against the Mustangs was not just about the strong outing from the pitchers. Malcolm Refalo had a clutch 2RBI (Runs Batted In) base hit in the bottom of the 3rd inning to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs. The rapidly improving Gerrard Xuereb also had an important base hit to drive in a run in the second inning. Giulia Lateo had a base hit and scored a run, whereas Kacey Grima reached base twice scoring 2 runs and Estelle Scicluna also scored a run. Armando Xuereb had the other base hit for the Redcoats and scored a run as well.
It was a dominant performance for the Redcoats to close this thoroughly enjoyable first season for the Club at youth level. As a recognition for their outstanding performances the 9 players that play for the Redcoats in the MABS Youth Baseball Major League were all invited by the MABS Baseball Academy for a practice session at the Marsa Sports Ground on Saturday, May 25 as well as for a 2-day training camp to be held at the Gozo Stadium on Friday June 7 & Saturday June 8. Congratulations to all the Redcoats for their fantastic season.
