The club is already making plans for the 2nd edition of the G&W Gozo Sports Fest so that this activity becomes a regular fixture in the sporting calendar of the island

On Saturday, June 2,  the Girls & Women Gozo Sports Fest 2018 took place in Ghajnsielem with the participation of around 90 athletes aged 6 to 17 from all over Gozo. The activity which took place between 9am and noon was the first one of its kind in Gozo.

The event was a collaboration between the four major clubs which promote sports with female athletes. The Gozo FC women’s team was responsible for the football station, Athletix AC was responsible for the athletics station, Shamrock Stars provided logistical and administrative support, whereas the Ghajnsielem Redcoats were responsible for the basketball and softball stations. There were 20 coaches conducting fun games for the participants at each station, all of whom were female. So were the eight team leaders who were responsible for each age group, leading them from one station to the next. This made the G&W Gozo Sports Fest 2018 a unique activity. It was also the first time that the Ghajnsielem Square officially hosted a sport as three basketball courts were set up with seven hoops available for the participants. At the centre of the square there was the spectacular 3v3 court which made the event all the more special.

This G&W Gozo Sports Fest had the support of various important organisations including the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) which was commemorating Olympic Day. The MOC handed a t-shirt to every participant, and at the end of the event presented a certificate of participation issued by the International Olympic Committee to everyone who attended.

The activities continued in the afternoon and evening. There was a fastpitch softball game which featured the Redcoats youth players. This was followed by a football game with the participation of the youth players of the Gozo FC Women’s team. At the main square the 3v3 tournament continued while boys and girls played basketball at the other two courts.

The Ghajnsielem Redcoats organised the event as part of the Erasmus+ Sports: Small Collaborative Partnerships project Inclusion & Gender Equality Through Softball (IGETS), in an effort to increase awareness about gender imbalances in sports. IGETS is co-financed by the European Union. The Ghajnsielem Redcoats received assistance from the Ministry of Education and Employment through the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport & Voluntary Organisations to meet its co-financing obligations. Although IGETS runs until the end of 2018, the club is already making plans for the 2nd edition of the G&W Gozo Sports Fest so that this activity becomes a regular fixture in the sporting calendar of the island.

The Ghajnsielem Redcoats would like to thank the three clubs that supported this initiative – Shamrock Stars, Athletix AC, and Gozo FC Women’s team; Ghajnsielem FC for making the football ground available for this activity; the Parish of Ghajnsielem and Archpriest Fr Frankie Bajada for the use of the main square; the Gozo Sports Board, the Ministry for Gozo, and especially the Maltese Olympic Committee. Special thanks to the coaches Maria Angela Caruana, Jennifer Bonello, Cynthia Saliba, Agnes Mizzi, Jolene Debattista, Charla Pia, the youth players of the Gozo FC Women’s team and the players of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats Softball team. Marlene Saliba, Charmaine Portelli, Elvira Buttigieg, and Susanne Vella also deserve special thanks for their assistance during the event.

WELL DONE to everyone. We hope to see you again for the G&W Gozo Sports Fest 2019.

IGETS is a two-year project co-financed by the European Union. The Għajnsielem Redcoats received assistance from the Ministry of Education and Employment through the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport & Voluntary Organisations to meet its co-financing obligations.
