TIGRI EASE PAST REDCOATS TO MAKE THE FINAL

The Ghajnsielem Redcoats faced Tigri Baseball Alghero from Sardegna in the 2nd game of Day 2. This was the final group game for both teams. Tigri had to defeat the Redcoats by at least 15 runs to top the group and make the tournament final. This was as a result of a tie in their 1st game against Europa, when they were up by 2 runs in the last inning and allowed Europa to tie the game. That tie proved to be unfortunate for both the Redcoats and Tigri as the team from Sardegna had to utilise their best pitchers against the team from Gozo at the cost of not having them available for the final due to tournament rules.

From the onset Tigri demonstrated that they were determined to achieve their objective. Still the Redcoats threatened to upset their opponents and had a runner thrown out at home in what proved to be a decisive base running error. The event that marked the game was the injury of Geordie Ellis when he was hit by a pitch on his knee and had to be carried off the field. This did not help the morale of the Redcoats as they were deprived of a key player for the rest of the game. This gave an opportunity to substitute Lara Buttigieg to play at 2nd base and she did not let her team down as she made an important put-out at 2nd base receiving a throw from Steve Bajada.

In the final inning Tigri were up by 16 runs and heading to the final, but the Redcoats tried everything to make the result more respectable. One run did manage to come home, but another runner was left stranded at the relief and joy of the Tigri supporters, coaches and players. With this loss the Redcoats were ranked 7th overall ahead of River Stones as the Redcoats scored 9 runs in the group stage, more than the 4th placed team in Group B.
