A SLOW START FOR THE REDCOATS

The Ghajnsielem Redcoats were disappointed with their performance in Game 1 of the XXXIV Memorial Civelli International Softball Tournament as they did not perform anywhere near their full potential. Although the Redcoats were playing against the highly rated SK Joudrs Praha Blue team, they expected a close game.

Estelle Scicluna started the game and pitched two innings. She gave up a single hit and two walks. Three runs scored on two errors. Lefty pitcher Monique Attard, relieved Estelle and pitched three innings. Monique, who had a fantastic first season pitching in the women’s league organised by the Malta Baseball & Softball Association, was somewhat overwhelmed by the pressure of the competition. She did not perform as she usually does, and the Joudrs took full advantage of that, scoring an additional 11 runs.

Similarly, the Redcoats hitters too succumbed to the pressure, and didn’t register a single hit. They could only muster two walks, the first of which was earned by Redcoats lead-off batter Estelle Scicluna in the top of the 1st inning. She attempted to steal on the first pitch and was incorrectly called out by home plate umpire, to the surprise of both teams, who thought that a tag was made when in effect the glove of the Joudrs short stop was nowhere close to the sliding Redcoats base runner. This bad call was very demoralising for the Redcoats, while it boosted the morale of the Joudrs pitcher who until that point threw five straight balls. That set the tone for the rest of the game as the Redcoats struggled with their bats.
