REDCOATS IMPROVE BUT STILL FALL SHORT
The second game of the tournament saw the Ghajnsielem Redcoats face Bulls Rescaldina in a battle for 2nd place of Group C. Once again the Redcoats started with right-handed pitcher Estelle Scicluna. She was phenomenal, striking out six of the ten batters she faced and gave up a solitary base hit. Due to tournament rules she could only pitch three innings.
The Redcoats were leading 2-0 when Monique Attard took over from Estelle. The young Redcoats pitcher couldn’t overcome her jitters and once again her opponents showed no mercy. This was a game that the Redcoats should have won with relative ease. Base running errors combined with underperformance by the hitters limited the Redcoats’ offence to just two runs. However, there were already several signs of improvement.
They managed their first base hit and scored the first run of the tournament, when in the 2nd inning Rebecca Grech batted in Simona Refalo who had reached on an error. The Redcoats would have scored more runs if it wasn’t for two costly base running errors in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Kimberley Scerri had a base hit to right field to score Daphne Cassar and she tried to extend it and got thrown out at 2nd base.
