RECAP

The Redcoats played their second game of the season this morning at the Marsa Sports Ground, when they took on the favourites for the title, the Marsa Mustangs. Ghajnsielem made improvements from their last outing most notably in their base running. There was little they could do, however, to stop the powerful Mustangs. The Redcoats were unlucky on a couple of occasions, episodes which would have made the score more respectable but other than that the Mustangs were worthy winners. The quality of their hitting, base running and fielding make them the team to beat.

The Redcoats opened the game meekly. This was quite possibly the result of too much apprehension about the strength of their opponents. Giulia Lateo reached base but the hitters behind her failed to advance her any further. The Mustangs wanted to make an impression on the Redcoats from their first at bat and did so scoring four runs, on a combination of good hitting, aggressive base running and poor fielding by the Redcoats.

The Redcoats pulled one back in the top of the second inning when Gianella Mallia drove in Kirsty Bonnici who had singled, as had Rebecca Grech and Gianella Mallia. But Rebecca Grech was thrown out at home plate and Estelle Scicluna lined out so that the Redcoats could not manage more than a run. The Redcoats started the bottom of the second inning brilliantly registering two quick outs but then missed a good opportunity for a three up three down inning, which is difficult at this level and went on to concede three runs.

The Redcoats were at this point demoralized and after getting blanked in the top of the third, when again Lateo was stranded following loud outs by the Redcoats, the Mustangs killed the game as a contest with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Redcoats opened the top of the fourth with singles by Kirsty Bonnici, Eden Debono and Annabel Said. The latter’s hit drove in Bonnici. But then Debono was thrown out at home. Denise Xuereb drove in Annabel Said. Estelle Scicluna reached base with a single to load the bases. Unfortunately, the Redcoats failed the score more following a strikeout and a line drive out by Lateo. The Mustangs added two more in the bottom of the inning, and the Redcoats failed to reduce the arrears any further in the top of the fifth and last inning so that the final score was Redcoats 3 Mustangs 13.

Once again several player parents and relatives attended the game even though it was played at Marsa. After the game the players and officials of the Redcoats enjoyed a snack at the Marsa Sports Club in the company of MABS President Mr. Mario Debono.
