RECAP

Boosted by their victory over the Leinster Royals, the 31st Athletics came out smoking in the Cup Final to determine the winner of the Gozo Cup Softball Tournament against the Connaught Rangers. In the 1st inning they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs. They continued to pad their lead adding a couple of runs in each of the next three innings. Although the Rangers kept chipping at their lead they never looked like they had enough to mount a comeback. The outcome of the game was put out of question in the top of the 5th and last inning when once more the Athletics scored four runs to put the game beyond reach at 14-6. The Rangers did manage to score two runs in the bottom half but it wasn’t enough. The jubiliant Athletics were at the end comfortable winners to claim the first edition of the Gozo Cup with a fine 14-8 victory.

The top of the batting order of the Athletics were relentless combining for 12 hits, 10 runs-batting-in, and 10 runs scored. They also reached base a further four times on errors committed by the Rangers. Corrine Zahra went 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. She was the most improved player of the tournament. Estelle Scicluna and Gianella Mallia once more worked really well together. Gianella registered eight put-outs, while Estelle had three put-outs and eight assists. Both teams were hitting the ball well with the Athletics registering 17 hits while the Rangers managed 14 hits. It was the excellent fielding that won the game for the Athletics. They committed four errors as opposed to nine errors committed by the Rangers.

After the game, Joseph Scicluna of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats, congratulated all the participants for their excellent showing during the three week long tournament. He went on to thank all the players and their coaches as well as the main sponsors of the tournament, Jesmond Mizzi Financial Advisors Ltd. Mr Jesmond Mizzi remarked on how entertaining the game was. He indicated that it is the policy of his company to sponsor such sporting events. Mr Mizzi then presented bronze medals to the players of the Leinster Royals  for placing third. The Connaught Rangers received silver medals along with a runners-up trophy.

The coaches of the three teams selected Estelle Scicluna as the tournament Most Valuable Player. She was outstanding throughout the tournament and led all players in most of the offensive and defensive statistics. In the Playoff and the Cup Final she was the driving force behind the two excellent performances of her team. Estelle was presented with the trophy for the Gozo Cup 2014 – Tournament Most Valuable Player by Mr Mizzi.

Gold medals were also presented to the cup winners, 31st Athletics. Before the presentation of the Gozo Cup, Joseph Scicluna, explained that such a large and heavy trophy was selected to be presented to the winners of the tournament so that no one player would be able to lift the cup without help from teammates, as since softball is a team sport, it requires a team effort to win. The Athletics were worthy winners because they played well as a team. Gianella Mallia and Estelle Scicluna, co-captains of the Athletics, were then presented with the prestigious Gozo Cup which together they lifted to the cheers of their team mates.
