Our softball heroins are truly making a name for themselves and Gozo and the Ministry for Gozo is proud to support this initiative and more to come
The Opening Ceremony for Sizzling Fastpitch was held last Saturday at the Għajnsielem Ground. Għajnsielem Redcoats President, Joseph Scicluna, made the opening address. He stated that the primary aim of Sizzling Fastpitch, which was to introduce Gozo to Softball Europe as a destination for tournaments and training camps, has already been achieved before a softball has been thrown or hit, as many teams have already expressed interest to participate in the 2020 edition of the tournament.
MABS President, Mr Jeff Tabone, along with Għajnsielem Mayor, Mr Kevin Cauchi, praised the efforts and professionalism of the Redcoats, in the way they organise events, and in how they run their club. Ms Mirjam Soumikil, Head Coach of Sparks Haarlem, thanked the Redcoats and the Minister for Gozo for the opportunity to travel to Malta to participate in the tournament.
Hon. Dr Justyne Caruana, Minister for Gozo, expressed how proud she was of the Redcoats for their achievements on and off the field. The Minister also indicated that she will continue to provide her support so that sports in Gozo continues to grow. Minister Caruana distributed a gift bag to each member of the two visiting team with souvenirs of Gozo.
In her post on Facebook the Minister wrote, “Well done GhajnSielem Redcoats for the Sizzling Fastpitch International Tournament held in Gozo. Our softball heroins are truly making a name for themselves and Gozo and the Ministry for Gozo is proud to support this initiative and more to come. Keep it up.“
The players of the Redcoats, the Herons and Sparks then formed six teams and played a tournament of Baseball5.
This initiative has been supported by the Ministry for Gozo Sport Organisations Assistance Scheme, a funding programme for Sport Organisations on the Island of Gozo.
