REDCOATS HONOURED AT THE GOZO SPORTS AWARDS

The Ghajnsielem Redcoats will continue to work hard to increase the rate of participation in sports among children, youths, adults and seniors. Adequate facilities and qualified coaches are however required for this to happen.

In a wonderful event organised by the Gozo Sports Board at the Sports Complex in Victoria, on Saturday, February 28, athletes, officials and teams where presented with awards for their accomplishments during 2014. The Ghajnsielem Redcoats were finalists in three categories.

In the Team of the Year category, the Ghajnsielem Redcoats baseball team that became the first youth team based in Gozo to win a national championship was finalist along with the double winners Xewkija Tigers senior football team and the Otters waterpolo senior team, who won the award. Estelle Scicluna, the outstanding performer on the Redcoats team that won the MABS Youths Baseball Major League, as well as team and league Most Valuable Player for 2014 was finalist for the most promising young female athlete award.

For the Official of the Year category, Joseph Scicluna, founder of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats and a member of the coaching staff, was voted as the winner. The importance of winning this award along with the other two nominations cannot be overstated. This is a massive honour for this young club and a great boost for its efforts to increase the popularity of baseball and softball in Gozo. The Ghajnsielem Redcoats will continue to work hard to increase the rate of participation in sports among children, youths, adults and seniors. Adequate facilities and qualified coaches are however required for this to happen.
