The 31st Athletics continued with their excellent postseason form to beat the Connaught Rangers 7-2 in the Softball Double Elimination Tournament Final of the Gozo Baseball & Softball League to be crowned the first ever Gozo Youth Softball Champions.

The Athletics took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning and continued to pad their lead with the Royals managing to get a run back in the bottom of the 6th and inning for a final score of 7-2. Gerrard Xuereb hit two doubles along with a home run and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Softball Division.

In the Final for 3rd Place the Leinster Royals overcame a depleted 63rd Reds team 3-0 to clinch 3rd place. The Royals, who finished the regular season with the best record, had a dip in form during the postseason that cost them a place in the final. Despite missing two key players, the Reds played well enough to keep the game close, however, they couldn’t put a few hits together for a comeback.

After the Final, Ghajnsielem Redcoats President, Joseph Scicluna, congratulated the players of all four team with special praise given to the brave Reds’ players who played their last three post season games missing experienced players but still managed to put on a great performance. Bronze medals were given to the players of the Leinster Royals. The trophy for 3rd place was handed to team captain Denise Xuereb. The players of the Connaught Rangers were also given silver medals and the trophy for 2nd place was presented to Estelle Scicluna, captain of the Rangers. Finally, the Athletics were given gold medals for their excellent achievement. Gerrard Xuereb was also handed with the MVP trophy as well as the Softball Champions cup.
