UNLUCKY REDCOATS FALL SHORT AGAIN

After the very promising outing against SK Joudrs Praha Orange the Redcoats had their hopes up for their encounter against Blue Girls Bologna. Once again Monique Attard was asked to pitch from the start. This time, however, the move this not leave the desired effect. She allowed eight runs in two innings to effectively end any hope the Redcoats had to register their first victory.

Offensively the Redcoats continued to grow and managed 11 hits. Kimberley Scerri continued to impress with two hits, two runs batted in (RBI) and even scored a run. Daphne Cassar and Marilise Vella also had two base hits each. Corrine Grima and Simona Refalo both had a base hit and an RBI, while Estelle Scicluna and Monique Camilleri also had a base hit and scored a run each. The Redcoats were extremely unlucky not to score more runs as in both the 3rd and 4th inning they had the bases loaded and the batter hit a ground ball straight at the Blue Girls Bologna 3rd base player for identical 523 double plays (3rd base to catcher to 1st base).

Throughout the tournament the Redcoats did not catch any breaks, and that is quite tough for a young inexperienced team playing their first international tournament. The game was also characterised by several fielding errors for the Redcoats to continue to compound the precarious situation. Estelle did replace Monique Attard in the 3rd inning but she couldn’t stop the bleeding. She did  register two strike outs, and none of the four runs that scored in the 4th inning were earned. At the end of Day 2 of the XXXIV Memorial Civelli International Softball Tournament Estelle was joint leader for the Best Pitcher of the Tournament Award with an earned run average (ERA) of 0.00! This was quite remarkable and it was not something that going into the competition the Redcoats expected.

With this loss the Redcoats were left with one final opportunity to obtain their first victory. On Sunday morning, in the placing final, they had a rematch with SK Joudrs Praha Orange to decide who finishes 9th.
