On Thursday, November 1st, five senior team players from SK Princ Zagreb and another five from Olympia Haarlem, arrived in Gozo from Croatia and the Netherlands respectively for the final transnational meeting of the Erasmus+ Sports: Small Collaborative Partnerships project, Inclusion & Gender Equality Through Softball (IGETS). They were each accompanied by a Club official.
The ten high level players came to Gozo to participate in the Gozo Cup 2018 Fastpitch Softball International Tournament organised as part of the IGETS project. The various objectives of the final transnational meeting included further capacity building in softball coaching for the three partners, sharing of best practices in playing softball, increasing awareness about gender imbalances in sports, and most importantly to help in the dissemination of the outcomes of the two-year-long project with stakeholders, policy makers, and the European softball community.
Upon their arrival a practice session was help in preparation for the two-game tournament. This session was held at the Għajnsielem Primary School with the involvement of Nicole Thomas, a US softball coach who is assisting in the capacity building efforts and sharing of best practices of this very ambitious softball project.
Following the practice session an introductory meeting was held to review the performance of the three partners and in preparation of the 4th and final transnational meeting. During the meeting the line-ups of the two teams were set for the first game scheduled for Friday afternoon. The visiting international players expressed their gratitude towards the three partners for giving them the opportunity to be part of IGETS, and were very excited to be able to contribute with their efforts for the success of the project.
IGETS is a two-year project co-financed by the European Union. The Ghajnsielem Redcoats received assistance from the Ministry of Education and Employment through the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport & Voluntary Organisations to meet its co-financing obligations.
