This season the Redcoats managed to win the two women’s fastpitch softball competitions organised by the Malta Baseball & Softball Association
The Ghajnsielem Redcoats defeated the Luxol Mustangs 18-0 at the Marsa Sports Complex on Sunday to clinch the Women’s Fastpitch Softball National Championship. This is a tremendous achievement for the Club, and for the players and coaches. After only the 3rd season participating in this competition, and with a team having an average age of just over 18 years, the Redcoats managed to reach the pinnacle of softball in Malta.
Having lost the first game of the Championship to the reigning two-time national champions, the Mellieha Curves, the Redcoats were left with a mountain to climb. The Redcoats had to win the remaining games and allow fewer runs than their main rivals for the title the Mellieha Curves. The biggest challenge was to defeat the Curves in Gozo. When the two team met at the Sannat Ground it turned out to be a classic for softball in Malta. Both teams played their best game of the season and the outcome of the game was uncertain until the end. The Redcoats came out on top and with that win they had destiny in their own hands. It was not an easy task as they had to beat the Luxol Mustangs twice without conceding any runs to clinch.
Following the 15-0 win at the Sannat Ground last month the Redcoats then went to Marsa looking for another shut-out to finished the job. The 18-0 score line was a bit harsh on the opponents as they threatened every inning with runners in scoring position. The Mustangs even had a runner thrown out at home plate. The Redcoats held their nerves until the end and got the shut-out they worked so hard to get to claim the National Championship for the first time.
This season the Redcoats managed to win the two women’s fastpitch softball competitions organised by the Malta Baseball & Softball Association. In Autumn, the Redcoats managed to retain the Tournament which they won the previous season and now they managed to do the double by winning the National Championship for the first time. Over the entire season the Redcoats amply demonstrated that they were the team to beat.
This was the first National Championship for the club at senior level and the first one for Gozo since the Gozo Tornadoes won the baseball National Championship in 2008.
CONGRATULATIONS to all the players and coaches for this wonderful achievement!
