It was a show of support for the good work that the club has been doing over the past five years in promoting gender equality in sports and striving to increase the rate of female participation

For the first time in the history of softball in Malta, this season there are two teams from Gozo participating in the Women’s Fastpitch Softball Tournament organised by the Malta Baseball & Softball Association. Both teams originate from the softball squad of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats. The objective of fielding two teams for this competition was to provide the opportunity for more players to participate in competitive fastpitch softball games. The first game between these two teams took place last month with Redcoats Softball registering a comfortable 12-7 victory over their squad mates Ghajnsielem Redcoats. For the second encounter, Minister for Gozo, Hon. Dr Justyne Caruana, was invited to participate in the pre-game ceremony.

The game took place this Sunday morning at the Sannat Ground. Hon Dr Justyne Caruana was very pleased to see such a large number of young women playing a team sport and competing at national level. She remarked that from the look on their faces the players seemed to be enjoying playing the game. She congratulated both sets of players for their dedication and for their achievements, and urged them to keep up their great efforts.

After being introduced to each player by the respective captains of both teams, Hon Caruana, threw the first pitch to start the game. Although it was a first for the Minister for Gozo, she did extremely well hitting the glove of Redcoats Softball catcher, Erica Andolfi. Club President Joseph Scicluna presented the Minister with a game jersey of the Redcoats as a memento of the occasion.

It was a great honour for the Ghajnsielem Redcoats to have the Minister for Gozo at the pre-game ceremony. It was a show of support for the good work that the club has been doing over the past five years in promoting gender equality in sports and striving to increase the rate of female participation in sports. The Redcoats will continue to work hard so that girls and women in Gozo have opportunities to play a sport.
