For the second year in a row the Redcoats participated along with thousands of other organisations from all over Europe in MOVE WEEK 2014 – NOW WE MOVE. This time it was the turn of the youngest of the Redcoats, the 4 to 6 year olds, who came out to promote opportunities to be active in sport.

The objective of MOVE Week is to promote the benefits of being active and participating regularly in sport and physical activity throughout Europe. The goal is to get 100 million more Europeans to be active in sports or physical activity by 2020. The Redcoats are keen to do their part by increasing the opportunities to practice a sports through baseball and softball and by introducing several team sports to children.

The session, which coincided with the launch of the ACTIVE START – YOUNG MULTISPORT ATHLETES, took place at the Gozo Sports Complex due to the threat of rain. The sixteen boys and girls who attended this first session were not disappointed as they played several fun games designed to develop their agility, coordination and balance. Programme coordinator, Joseph Scicluna, was assisted by Josef Cutajar, Estelle Scicluna and Josephine Scicluna.

Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, along with Alvin Grech, CEO of the Gozo Sports Board, visited the Redcoats during this session. Mr Grech indicated that the Gozo Sports Board will continue to work to increase the opportunities for children to practice sports. Dr Refalo said that through his Ministry he will make every effort to upgrade existing sporting facilities as well as add new ones.

The Redcoats would like to thank all the parents for showing their support for this new programme. The Kunsill Malti Ghall-iSport, the Gozo Sports Board as well as Dr Anton Refalo deserve special praise for their efforts to promote sporting activities in Gozo.

The ACTIVE START programme will continue next Saturday, October 11, at the Gozo Stadium from 9am till 10am.
