During Awards Night held on August 10, 2013, at the Dolmen Resort Hotel Qawra, eight members of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats received awards from the Malta Baseball & Softball Association.
Eight members of the Ghajnsielem Redcoats received awards from the Malta Baseball & Softball Association for their achievements during the 2012/13 season.
Kacey Grima was named Rookie of the Year and Giulia Lateo was named Outstanding Fielder, both for their achievements in the Youth Softball League which was organized in Malta for the first time ever last season. Kacey had 10 base hits including an inside-the-park home run and scored 9 runs in the 6 games of the softball league. She also made 25 put-outs playing at 1st base in the 5 games for which there are defensive records. Giulia had 23 assists and made 11 put-outs playing at the pitcher’s position, in the 5 games for which there are records.
Estelle Scicluna was voted Rookie of the Year for her achievements in the Youth Baseball Minor League. Estelle had 9 hits with 2 runs-batted-in (RBI) and 2 runs scored. Defensively, Estelle made 25 put-outs and had 2 assists as well, playing at 2nd base.
Armando Xuereb was named Rookie of the Year while Massimo Mallia was awarded Outstanding Pitcher for their achievements in the Youth Baseball Major League. Armando had 3 hits from 5 at-bats, scoring 4 runs with 3 RBIs. Armando impressed most as a pitcher although he also excelled as a catcher. He pitched 5 innings, striking out 8 batters, with a 0-1 record and saved a game. Massimo had a 2-1 record as a pitcher. He pitched 6 innings and recorded 6 strike-outs.
Joseph Scicluna was awarded Rookie of the Year, Loreto Scicluna was voted Outstanding Pitcher, while Jeff Tabone was named Outstanding Hitter for their achievements in the National Softball League. Joseph had 18 base hits, scored 10 runs, batted in another 6 runs and had 11 walks. Defensively, Joseph, who played mainly at 2nd base, made 20 put-outs and had 6 assists, while committing 4 errors in the 12 games played. Loreto pitched 79 innings striking out 18 batters. Jeff registered 17 hits including 4 home runs from 37 at-bats. He had 8 RBIs and scored 15 runs in 10 games.
The Redcoats’ players in attendance were accompanied by several family members in what was a great event organised by the Association to celebrate the conclusion of a very successful season.
The Ghajnsielem Redcoats would like to take this opportunity to thank MABS, especially Mr Mario Debono, the President of the Association, for the support received throughout this past season which was the first for the Redcoats competing in the national leagues.
